TechnologyThe revised EU Industrial Emissions Directive (IED, 2024 amendment) expands its scope to cover more facilities and tightens Best Available Technique (BAT) conclusions for water discharges. For industrial operators across Europe, this means stricter emission limit values (ELVs), more frequent monitoring, and new reporting obligations.
Food and beverage: Tighter COD and nutrient limits, mandatory water efficiency benchmarking. BAT-AEL for COD: 30-125 mg/L depending on sub-sector.
Chemicals and pharmaceuticals: New limits on specific organic compounds, PFAS disclosure requirements, enhanced monitoring for priority substances.
Textiles: Strict color removal requirements (≤ 50 Pt-Co), AOX limits, heavy metal restrictions on dye-related discharges.
Metals and surface treatment: Tighter heavy metal limits (Cu, Ni, Zn, Cr to single-digit µg/L in some cases), zero liquid discharge increasingly considered BAT.
Existing installations have 4 years from the publication of updated BAT conclusions to achieve compliance. New installations must comply immediately. The clock is ticking — early assessment and planning is critical to avoid permit violations and enforcement action.
Non-compliance can result in permit revocation, mandatory shutdowns, fines up to €100,000 per violation (varies by member state), public disclosure of violations, and personal liability for responsible managers. The revised IED also strengthens public participation rights, meaning local communities can challenge permit conditions more easily.
When new BAT conclusions are published, your competent authority must review and update your permit within 4 years. The new permit conditions will reflect the updated BAT-Associated Emission Levels (BAT-AELs). If your current treatment system cannot meet the new limits, you must upgrade or face non-compliance.
Compliance starts with knowing your current discharge quality. Request a RIEFILT Water Assessment — we analyze your wastewater against the latest BAT conclusions for your sector, identify gaps, and recommend treatment upgrades that bring you into compliance before the deadline hits.
